Yep - perhaps one day Hollywood will make a good weather film, but after many attempts (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods) they still haven't gotten it right - apparently they want to inject human interest in the script but it never comes out quite right...
And, in reality storm chasing is like flying - hours of boredom with seconds of stress in between...
While Jo's staff were overdone it was in some ways similar to the real life "geeks" - overall nice people but people who do often live for their work, to the point that most never marry because their work is their life...
I went out with the professional storm chasers once (thunderstorm seeding) and I mean it when I way it was tons of fun, though we did sit in the research trailer for hours waiting for something to form overhead as the resesach aircraft did their job - a good thunderstorm finally did form after we left the trailer and were driving back to the office on a rural road...
Field experiments are pretty complicated, requiring a lot of planning and research grant money - that part of the film was correct, though the vehicles used, well, that you usually don't see - field vehicles are not usually used school buses or old 4-doors but more like the vans seen used by the "bad guy" group...
