I get the impression that Rob never dated Mike's girlfreind but was close to both of them. Remember Mike's ex-girlfreind rings him up and says to him "I hear your moving back east". In the movie you only see Mike tell Rob that he's thinking of moving back east. Which suggests that Rob has been called by mike's ex-girlfreind and found that out. I viewed it more as if Rob and Mike's ex are more just freinds.

Rob and Mike are both from NY, know the same people, and Rob would have known Mike when he was with Michelle. It's always easier for someone to understand the dynamics of another relationship when they've known both people and seen them together.
To contrast, Trent would never understand because he even admits he's never been in a relationship that lasted six years. And, he doesn't have the background of having known Mike when Mike was with Michelle.
