"You're all astronauts on some sort of STAR TREK!"

As goofy as it is, I love this line from Zefram Cochrane. But I was just wondering, is this the only time we hear the words "Star Trek" used in any canon installment (movies or episodes)?

reply

Yes, and be thankful. In an effort to scam money from Alexander Courage, Roddenberry penned lyrics to the original theme song. I cringe to think of them actually using that for the show.

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.

By the way, that line from Cochrane makes me cringe every time.

I like the line from Cochrane...and I like Roddenberrys lyrics.

As corny as Cochrane's line was, I always thought it was funny that the writers decided to put the phrase "star trek" in some of the dialogue.

I can sort of picture them discussing this line and think they were being really clever. ξ€²

I can see why, it doesn't bother me much though. I usually find it pretty cringe-worthy when they say the name of the film in the film itself. Unless it really feels organic and fits in well, which this doesn't. After all, who says "star trek" unless they've heard of Star Trek? I don't mind it in this case, because it's meant as a joke. It's not laugh out loud funny or anything, at best I might give it the same little smirk the characters did. I'm sure a joke that breaks the fourth wall probably doesn't go over as well with all Star Trek fans though. It wasn't the best delivery either.

And yes, thank God those lyrics were never used. I have heard there were lyrics, but I've never actually seen them. How horrific. I was just reading up on it, and I can't tell, was Roddenberry actually successful in getting 50% of the royalties? The things I've read are kind of vague, but kind of make it sound like he was.

The closest I can think of is in All Good Things when Q says "It's time to put an end to your trek through the stars!"

Enterprise attributes the whole "boldly go where no one has gone before" to Cochran, it's interesting that he gets both.

In "All Good Things..." Q uses the phrase "trek amongst the stars", that's as close as anyone else gets to the title.
