Gosh

Another thing I think is really sad about this movie is the opposite effect of the system. At the beginning of the movie, the boys were dumb kids who made a stupid mistake. Two were altar boys, and they all seemed like genuinely good kids. After time in a "correctional" facility, half came out druggies and murderers while another became a master manipulator hell-bent on revenge.
If this is a true story, the last one came to tell the story and be scorned for it, called a liar. I do not know if it has been mentioned before but for all the people so hot to decry this story, think a little more. If these things were actually happening and covered up, other records could have been falsified too. I've seen posts that are all proud of themselves saying, "Well, the records show that Lorenzo was in school during the time the events of this movie supposedly occurred." The records also showed that a boy who was beaten to death and reduced to "nothing left" died of pneumonia.

OK, first off the record of the boy beaten to death takes place in this fictional book.

But that part is plausible. Changing the death of someone in a closed instition like a reformity is one thing. Changing the records of basically the entire world is another. There are the school records. There are the court records, which were also altered, strange this would be a trial that would have gotten national attention. Also, everyone's memory was also altered as Carcaterra's teachers, priest and classmates are his worst detractors.

You are the one who needs to think a little more. This story is fiction. You need to come to terms with it.

how do u know it didnt happen? were u there? no. its one thing to get abused as a kid in a young offenders home, but then to be accused of lying?

and ur bit where u said at that time, teachers claimed that shakes was in school, well carcaterra also stated that when he wrote the books he changed names, locations, ages and TIMES.

Ashlee, first of all, let me commend you for taking the time to not only think cogently, but to write like an educated and credible adult. We all know how difficult it is to actually spell out words, such as "your," and "you," so let me just say that I, for one, appreciate it.

Actually, I do mean to compliment you-- it is increasingly rare to read comments online that are intelligent and show even modest respect for language and considered opinion, so... thanks.

But I wanted to add that I had a couple friends growing up in Chicago who were thrown into "correctional" facilities for minor things. One of these guys was busted with a nickel bag. (That's how old I am.) He went into the Audy Home, where he was beaten and raped. Another pal of mine got busted for running away and possession; he went into the Cook County Jail, despite the fact that he was only 17. He was first assaulted by other inmates, then beaten by guards, who broke his jaw into several pieces. We never heard from him again.

On my own 18th birthday I found myself in jail for being a passenger in a crashed van, belonging to my Italian pal. He put up such a stink that the cops searched the van for anything they could lock us up for, and found a couple of old beer cans. As we sat in the local jail, an officer came in and asked the other officer if we were "ready for transport to Cook County." Just then, our bail walked in.

Whew.

As an epilogue, the lawyer provided by my pal's dad got us off with a warning. His dad worked for a noted Italian organization headed at the time by a Mr Aiuppa.

Oh, thank you. :) Sorry, I never knew anyone responded to this.
I'm sorry about your friends.
