Why did Little Caesar need the debt as motivation (SPOILER)

...to kill Henry Attison. Wasn't the fact that Attison had killed his brother enough?

Watch the scene again. Little Caeser thought that Rizzo died of pneumonia because that's apparently what the warden of the reformatory or the medical staff told the family.

King Benny goes to visit Little Caesar. @1:53:09 of the film, in reference to Addison, he says to Little Caesar: "He owes you Rizzo. He's the man who killed your brother".

And then Little Caeser says "They said he died of pneumonia." Maybe Benny thought Caeser wouldn't believe him when he told him Addison killed Rizzo.

I doubt it.

Benny answers, "(That's what) they SAID (he died of pneumonia)" to tell Caesar Addison had actually killed Rizzo.

From that moment on the $8K is irrelevant. Caesar is going to have Addison smoked.

Obviously he does not need the debt to justify killing Attison to himself, my impression was that he used it to justify the killing under some sort of gangster code / ethics. When Caesar buys his debt, it is accepted in the underworld that he may kill him for non-payment. But it may have been against 'standard business practices' and caused problems if he had killed Attison without securing the debt since the original debt-holder would be out $8k. It is probably a faux pas to kill someone who owes another gangster money.

That's a possibility.

Off topic, but what a fabulous shirt he's wearing. It's perfectly tailored for him.

I always imagined King Benny took the money as payment for the information under the guise that it was a loan. At the end of the day King Benny wasn't a Samaritan. Even though he was helping out the guys he wasn't going to miss out on cash if he could. If he had told him before Little Caesar paid up then he'd have nothing to bargain with. The guys tell King Benny that the guards killed Rizzo, KB sells the info to LC as payment for giving the information and also for sticking his neck out to get Addison killed, LC kills Addison, everybody gets what they want.

He didn't know who he was obviously. King Benny was the one that told him that he killed his brother. The guy was in debt to Benny, Benny didn't like debt so he passed it Ceaser. Therefore the guard gets killed and Benny has no debt.

reply

King Benny had bought the debt off the original people to whom money was owed, and sold it on basically.

I'm also sure that before Addison was beaten up and killed by Little Caesar and his gang, they probably showed the picture of Rizzo in order to remind him who he killed when he was a guard back at Wilkinson and why he was getting beaten and eventually killed afterwards.
