Carol Martinez most unnecessary characer in movie history
She added nothing to the story, and slowed down the pace of the film. The movie would have been much better if they left her out.

shareBy all means dont think I am sexist nor racist but I think she was only put into the movie to have a woman co-star. It is like putting a random black person into a movie to make it seem like there is no inequality.
Carol added nothing to the story apart from to make it look like she had a relationship with all the boys.

Jesus, that's really super... How'd a nitwit like you get so tasteful?
The other women characters in the movie (Shakes's mom, the knocked up slut, the legless girl, and Mrs. Salinas)were all a million times better than carol.
shareI agree. Even the knocked up slut had more meaning.

I agree Daniel. And what I really hate is the fact that Shakes tells us what became of her at the end (as if we gave a *beep*
shareYes! I forgot about that, I can't believe they even mentioned her he should have talked about his family and etc. Like you said its not like we give a *beep* what happened to her.

Yeah no kidding. I would have liked to known what became of him, his dad, Fr. Bobby, etc.
shareI agree 100%. She was completely pointless, probably just the token female.

Wow. I must be the only one that doesn't have a problem with her and thinks she fits into the movie fine....

She was comletely a relevant character. She was the link between the horrors of the past and the present. She was in love with Michael but fell out of love because he couldnt reveal his past. It is also her that reveals the fact to Michael that Fr. Bobby knows about the abuse. As to why she was mentioned at the end, well she was the friend that understood.
shareI didn't have a problem with her.
shareI felt she added to the emotional aspect.
the failed relationship with Michael... showing the emotional scars were still present.
I didn't like the character because even though she was a good friend, she was basically being passed around from guy to guy and had the audacity to name her son after all of them or something like that. Gross.
I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life.
I don't think the fat man ever had a turn, kinda suck for him.
shareWow you guys! She was only with two of them! Are you saying that when you had a group of close friends like when you were a teenager that none of you ever dated more than one person in that group and neither did any of your friends? I find that hard to believe unless you never had a group of close friends. As for her naming her kid after all of them that was done out of love. Just like you would name your kid for a family member. They were her chosen family.
shareI really liked Carol's dialogue about and scene with Michael . It showed the particular effect the abuse had on Michael - it severely affected his ability to have relationships, because he couldn't fully let go and even trust a girl he'd known since childhood. Without that scene and the knowledge of Carol and Michael's past attempt at a relationship, we basically wouldn't know in any detail the effect the abuse had on Michael. So for that reason alone Carol's character did have a purpose.
I think she also illustrated the loyalty between the childhood friends in that she had no knowledge of the abuse but even as Tommy and John descended into a life of crime, she didn't give up on them. Father Bobby also displayed this quality of course, but having another character do so didn't hurt in driving the theme home.
As for the ending, I like that it showed Carol named her son after all of the boys. I thought it was a really nice touch to illustrate that the bond the boys had would live on in some way (cheesy as that sounds) once the movie's events ended. Also, Carol was the only one of Shakes' childhood friends to stay in Hell's Kitchen with him. Tommy and John died of course, and Michael moved, so it was good for Shakes' character to have one of his childhood friends stay with him even when everything else around him changed.
So in my opinion, Carol was far from having 'no purpose'.
