Recognition....

I recently watched this film again after not having seen it since it was in theaters. I'm sure others have mentioned it, but the scene in which John first recognizes Nokes in the pub really gave me the chills. The look of recognition and awareness on his face the second he realizes he's looking at Nokes, and then the wave of emotions John experiences after he goes into the bathroom: fear, anxiety, shame, and finally, joy, is very powerful to watch. The music playing on the jukebox fits perfectly.

It's a really powerful scene.

I couldn't agree more. You could see/feel it particularly in the way he delivered the line, "Not right now...enjoy the rest of your meal." He could have blasted Nokes then and there, but it was as if he reverted to being a kid again...as you pointed out, too ashamed, too afraid to do so. There were many truly heartbreaking scenes...another one on the subway, right after Michael(Pitt) hears out that Carolyn knew about the abuse/rapes and he tries to touch her hair before leaving.

Just play that song anytime in your everyday life ["Witchi Tai Tai" by Everything is Everything] and stare into a mirror while contemplating your life.....you'll never be the same.

Start singing the song in public while looking directly into the eyes of others....it's very liberating.

That Championship Season (1982) - Most underrated movie of all time.
