Douglas Cook Dies: Screenwriter Of ‘The Rock’, ‘Double Jeopardy’ Was 56


Screenwriter Douglas Cook died at noon Sunday in Santa Monica. He was 56 and was surrounded by his family when he passed away. Cook and his writing parter David Weisberg wrote the screenplays for The Rock, Double Jeopardy and the upcoming picture Criminal.

The Rock, for producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, starred Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris. The 1996 action thriller about a threatened nerve gas attack on San Francisco was directed by Michael Bay and grossed more than $335 million worldwide.

Double Jeopardy, a 1999 mystery-thriller directed by Bruce Beresford, starred Ashley Judd, Tommy Lee Jones and Bruce Greenwood. The film about a woman framed for the faked murder of her husband grossed $116.7 million domestic and $61.1 million foreign.

Criminal, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman and Jones, is a thriller about a dead CIA agent whose memories and skills are implanted into the brain of a dangerous outlaw with the hope of thwarting a terrorist. Directed by Ariel Vromen, it’s slated for release next year.
