It's Amazing How Un-Michael Bay this Film Feels...

Despite it being his second film.

The movie isn't just a mindless action flick, but actually has several themes and statements on war and the effect it has on those who participate in it. The villains are domestic terrorists, with the main one being American and who simply wants respect and reparations for the actions of his men, the one who saves the day in the end is the lone British SAS member, and the movie heavily criticizes the poor treatment of veterans that was common at the time.

It's like the complete opposite of the stereotypical Michael Bay flick.

Yea well that was probably the writers

If it's the writers that made it great surely it's the writers to blame for all the "bad" films the guy has made?

reply

Yeah, they are.

This movie is very Michael Bay.
It has all his signature trademarks, like: The low angle 360 shot, the array of explosions (because a single one isnt enough), destruction of expensive cars, color grading, black comics, funny one liners, fast scenes, etc.

You just happen to like the plot of the movie.

What sets this Bay movie apart is the cast and the writers.

Agreed, but he still had a lot of restraint twenty years ago. Keep in mind that it was before studios gave him blank checks to make his movies as big, loud, and dumb as possible. Here's looking at you, Transformers.

A movie is a huge collaboration between everyone involved in production. The "un-Michael Bay-ness" is simply because Michael Bay wasn't the only one with major input when it was shot. The director, the actors, writers, the producers (Jerry, Don), the cinematographers, the music composers (Hans, Harry), you name it.
