So this microfilm, yeah it's a nice mcguffin for the movie but really it had who really shot JFK on it and the Roswell crash. Why were these events so important they had to be put on microfilm which could so easily be stolen and hidden, as we find out later Mason had done just that.

I took it that that's how Mason had collected the documents through several "missions". The film was just a way of keeping all that data in one.... "mcguffin".
