the first 20 minutes of the movie...

Is it just me or they could have removed the first 20 minutes of the movie and it would not have changed a damned thing?
(Except for the little bit at the very beginning where the champion boxer receives his invitation scroll)

What was the point of showing us van damme running around like an idiot in the streets, with face paint on, with these stupid kids and that wannabe gangster. Totally irrelevant to the rest of the movie.

The remainder of the movie was decent, though. The fights scenes (what people WANT to see) were good.

You're totally right. They could have saved those minutes for longer fight scenes. There are many pointless scenes in this movie.

I think he was just trying to add character to his character. Sure, I'd prefer more fight scenes over that stuff as well. But, hey, it's still one of the best "fight" movies ever made.

He shown us his story! That's the answer of your question! If you want fight go and watch UFC or whatever you want... how would a movie look like if there are fight scenes only and no story in it? Then it won't be called "movie".

Hmm, I always find myself fast-forwarding the first 20 minutes, they are simply boring. Yes, it adds to the character, but they should have shortened it.

I'm watching it now. The first scene in the bar was like, so horribly bad, like not even bad in a good way, I almost threw up.

Definitely a bump in my Van Damme marathon =(

Van Damme directed the movie so he probably wanted to show off his acting 'range' or directorial skill.

reply

I doubt he did much "directing". Sounds like the production was a total mess and the guy who had directed Rambo III got things together. But promoting it as JCVD's directorial debut is a lot more appealing to the public.

I see the only other film he "directed" was done in 2010 and has never been released. That speaks volumes to me.

Sadly Van Damme seems a bit of a lowlife.

Van Damme is no a lowlife. He certainly has problems--the numerous affairs he has has do nothing good for his reputation--but I believe him to be a caring and compassionate soul at heart. At the very least, he's known for doing animal rescues, and he seems to be a good father to his two kids.

If you want to see a true lowlife, look at Steven Seagal:

The next ruler of Ukraine for all we know.
