I didn't like it either. Roger Moore was just about the only good part for me.

Doesn't surprise me. What book is that? Title?

VanDamme directed and edited this film. Cut from the final movie was Roger Moore's one action scene, an engagement with swords against martial artist/stunt man Jerry Piddington.

Also cut from the film is a great deal of footage providing depth to the story and charachter development for the other fighters in the tournament.

roger moore sword fight, that would have been nice to see...

likewise with On Deadly Ground, would have been good to see Sir Michael Caine and Steven Seagal indulge at least in a little fisticuffs... I think Sir Michael had also been quoted as saying it was one of his less favourite films.

Pity in both cases, they both bought something interesting to the table, but perhaps they could have been allowed to bring a little more...

vaguely from 20 years ago I do think i recall seeing some of the cinema posters giving equal billing to Van Damme and Roger Moore, but I could be wrong.

Umm...duh?

btw, did he say that before or after he appeared in Boat Trip?

After Boat Trip.

Moore refers to the making of this film in his autobiography. He never got on well with Van Damme or Moshe Diamant (the producer and Van Damme's mate). According to Moore's book, the production was badly organised and the cast and crew were not treated well at all. He mentions something to do with night shooting. Apparently the cast and crew were dragged to a remote spot in some rainforest - a quite dangerous part to get to - for no reason whatsoever. Apparently the filming could have taken place miles away in a much safer place but for no reason whatsoever, some remote dangerous part was chosen.

Also, Moore writes how he was promised second billing 'above title' personally by Van Damme. This never happened and Moore was billed as a supporting actor. Moore was led to believe that this film might kick-start his career but of course, this did not happen. I'm not sure if receiving second billing would have made any difference though.

Lastly, Moore states that Moshe Diamant called him one day a few years after the making of this film. I think Diamant was intending to be friendly. As soon as he introduced himself, "Hi, it's Moshe Diamant", Moore hung up.

I'd say there is bad blood there.

He´s done at least two fare worse movies since that Boat Trip & Spice World and Fire, Ice and Dynamite, Bullseye & The naked Face were a lot worse then The Quest (in my opinion).

reply

It's not about what is his worst movie. It's Moore's least favorite because of his bad memories about the shooting and the contrast between the result and the expected success.

A movie like Boat Trip (just to name one) might have been worse, but was probably fun to shoot and nobody expected it to be a big hit.

reply

If you include documentaries, The Secret KGB UFO Files (which Moore narrated) was even worse.

reply

I like Moore in Boat Trip, it was fun to watch him play an older gay gentleman with a military background.

reply

Well as I recall everyone was told this was supposed to be Roger Moore's last film. Press went out to that effect also.

Having much of his work edited out of the film... doesn't surprise me he wasn't happy. And yes, they filmed in a bunch of remote locations.

reply

Well, coming from an accomoplished veteran actor talking about a fony pseudo martial art astist who's acting skills are comparable to those of a 3 year old, I'm not too surprised..

Van Damme must have used the profit he got from Bloodsport to hire him and thats about it, I would be very surprised to see Moore siding with Van Damme again

That being said, a link or at least a quote or source could have been nice.. ?

It's from Roger Moore's autobiography called 'My Word is My Bond'. There's no link to this quote because it's from a book. Have a look on Amazon for it.

reply

Bloodsport? of all the movies Van Damme made, why use that one in your example? Van Damme did not fund this movie himself.

Sorry this is off the topic but why does Roger Moore look so good in this? He made A View to a Kill 10 years before this and looked like he'd been wheeled out of a nursing home. Thought I'd ask here since a lot of you guys seem to have read his autobiography.

reply

Yes, I noticed that too. He looked younger in this than he did in a View to a kill?!!

I strongly believe it was all in his hair. He had a shorter, thinning 80s style in AVTAK. It wasn't parted but combed back to the side. In The Quest, his hair was much longer and styled in the way his hair was in the mid-70s. I also personally think he shouldn't have removed the mole on his face in 1984. That also made his appearance in AVTAK look more different. Especially compared to Octopussy.
