Roy/Aaron: illogical twist [SPOILERS]

The archbishop was killed because he forced Roy to have sex with Linda and the other guy.

There was no Aaron.

The revenge plot would have made sense with the vulnerable Aaron forced to go against his good nature.

The forced sex, a motive for Aaron, does not fit Roy's persona.

Roy is abusive, selfish.

I get the feeling that, to the contrary, he would have kept on with the sex, pretending to be a suffering Aaron, while secretly manipulating and the archbishop and Linda, waiting for the day he could blackmail the archbishop or use the situation to his advantage.

The thing is, we have no idea what Roy/Aaron's real motive was for the murders. The fact than there is no Aaron, just like there is no Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects, changes the reality of everything we saw and everything we think we know. It could be that Roy/Aaron participated in "Purging the Devil" of his own free will, and enjoyed it. And perhaps had some other reason for killing Rushman and Linda. So I'm not so sure that there's anything illogical about the final twist.

I think the book went more in depth with this, but it's been over a decade since I've read it. I believe Roy had his own motives for letting things play out the way they did (even if it was just meanness). William Diehl was the author, if you're curious about the book.

you need to watch again and understand where Marty uses the mysterious Michael O'Donnell as what lawyers call a Blue Horse.

then you will remember the "bad bad thing" Marty did, as told in bar scene

Marty, 10 years back, had obeyed his boss "Shawn-Assy" [I assume a deliberate anagram] and dropped all charges against archbishop in the O'Donnell case [and by inference Roy was just one more of his numerous pedophile victims]

so Roy decided if the law had failed them HE would do the job FOR them, and practiced the Aaron character for years on end.

get the picture? this is very similar to motive in The Sixth Sense where Vincent at age 10 is similarly abused [but with Zoloft] by the shrink and comes back at 18 or so to KILL him.

now read on as they say [but ask if you need more help]

ie the forced sex was WAAAAY after the fact

So your saying Roy amd O'Donnell are the same person?

reply

not at all

we are told of abuse against O'Donell 10 years before but not told of Roy at that time

logic says Roy too was abused at the same time by the same bishop [like there would have been hundreds] and when he saw that Vail simply covered it all up he decided on a "Vigilante" style get even

it worked - happy ending, but only ONE of these churchy pedophiles.
