Cancao do Mar by Dulce Pontes

I had been a fan of Southland, the police drama on TV. I had not seen Primal Fear until recently, and was very surprised when suddenly I heard what was the Southland theme song. I looked it up and discovered that it's Cancao do Mar by Dulce Pontes, a very beautiful piece. To my memory, it's the first time I heard music that was used both in a movie and as a TV theme song. Anyone else catch that, or know of other examples?

Well, i don't know, but if we think about it the song is used because like you said is a beautiful piece.

The problem is that the song itself has no relation whatsoever with the movie or the tv drama, meaning that anyone can use a song just because it's beautiful.

So if that is an option and not using a song that is theme related, i bet there are hundreds of songs used for movies or tv shows.

Just a short search i found William Tell overture, Believe it or not, Teardrop, etc.

I remember having a similar reaction years later with the show "Chuck" on NBC which used an instrumental version of Cake's "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" that later turned up in an Apple ad. Or check out the very recognizable theme to "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." That is all over the place.

I noticed that too!
