Japanese DVD only?

There seems to be only a Japanese DVD of this. Seen another release?

I was wondering about what copies of this film are available also. One reviewer here mentioned to be sure to get the uncut version.

Does anyone know which is the uncut version? Does anyone know the length of the uncut version versus the length of the cut version?

reply

I have not heard of the cut and uncut version but that would be nice to know.

does anyone know if the Japanese DVD has English subtitles? I went to Amazon Japan and I cannot read Japanese and cdjapan.co.jp doesn't indicate any English subtitles.

I hope some out there can enlighten the rest of us. I love gatlif and would like to get this.

I bought the Japanese DVD, and it only includes:

- French audio
- Optional Japanese subtitles
- Chapter selection
- Trailer

However, having studied French for years, I obviously didn't need subtitles, and I bought it anyway.

The length is 80 minutes (just like the VHS edition available in North America), and the picture quality is excellent (definitely one of the best transfers I've ever seen... and I own hundreds of DVDs!).

Unfortunately, the DVD has the same fault as the VHS: it is in Full Screen format (1.33:1).
If you watch the trailer, you immediately realize that the movie was originally shot with a wider aspect ratio (at least 1.66:1) and then "trimmed" for home video.

Actually, the film was shot full screen and later matted down to 1.66:1. A lot of movies back in those days were done like that, including "Matthew Hopkins: Witchfinder General", "The Wicker Man", "Yellow Submarine", "Peeping Tom", "The Vanishing", "Twisted Nerve", "A Hard Day's Night", "Help!", "Let It Be", "Goldfinger" and the other early Bond Films that weren't shot in 2.35, "Psycho", "Stroszek", "Aguirre, the Wrath of God", "The Cassandra Crossing", ALL of Kubrick's films before "Eyes Wide Shut" and excluding "2001" and "Spartacus" (including "ACO", "Barry Lyndon", "The Shining" , "Strangelove", and "Lolita"), "Z" , "Daughters of Darkness", "The Damned" and others more.

As for the film, it's the same as the New Yorker VHS from '97 (Transferred from film in the case of the DVD as opposed to the VHS which used the frame-interpolated PAL-to-NTSC master), but the print is more darker than the VHS, strangely, using a different colour tint.
