This could be the key to the whole movie

Fred: I like to remember things my own way.
Investigator: What do you mean by that?
Fred: How I remember them..Not necessarily the way they happened.

The key might be observation. Rene: "...Near the observatory."

Absolutely. People have really varied theories on what to take away from this film. But so few people address this line.

Fred killed Laurent when he figured out what was going on. Then, he killed his wife in a crime of passion. The Fred we see at the beginning of the film is a broken man with a fractured psyche.

Some say the "dream" begins when he goes to sleep in his cell.

I say just about everything we see in the film is subjective to Fred, in one way or another.

What kind of a username is Marxist Bros? Far left?

Hey, I´m with you on this one. The whole movie is inside the mind of Fred exept the scene of the interrogation (after the punch in the face) and everything that happens in prison. So, the movie consists of two fantasies: the first one is light, the second one is stronger and deeper.
