Would I like this movie?

I absolutely loved Mulholland Drive, but absolutely hated Blue Velvet. Never seen Lost Highway. Would I like it? (i.e., which of those two is it more like?)

If you love MD I definitely recommend LH. Together with Inland empire they form a trilogy of the "suppression" as I like to call it. Mind you, this is my take on it and I believe many would not agree with me. I view these movies a s a trilogy, so in my opinion LH certainly has way more in common with Mulholland Drive than it does with Blue Velvet.

This said I do think LH and MD are different in mood and atmosphere. I find LH much more darker and more akin a horror movie than MD. The structure of the narrative is similar, but where MD feels like a tragedy this movie is much more black and white in it's handling of the main theme and looks and feels like horror to me. Mostly psychological horror, but some scenes are definitely shocking. Although I must admit I find MD a real masterpiece I do feel LH is right up there, albeit I would rate it slightly less. I'm of the opinion LH gets a bad rep mostly because of the soundtrack. It's very bold and out there and I must confess I find it sometimes poorly chosen (like Rammstein), but overall I think the soundtrack is quite effective. The music accompanying the love making on the beach I find absolutely breathtaking: this scene I find one of the most haunting in all of Lycnh's work.

So if you haven't seen LH yet, I certainly would recommend it. To me it is a minor masterpiece.

the love making on the beach

...one small correction - it is actually in a desert, not a beach. However, I would agree that "Lost Highway" has many similar elements as Mulholland Drive, including some of the noir pieces, and the 50's / 60's vibe in the fantasy or dream moments.
