How is this movie set in the same world as Twin Peaks?

Or so I have heard it is.

I have basically solved the majority of Twin Peaks unanswered questions and I'd like to start theorizing on this movie....as morbidly complex as it is. I have read in the FAQ that there are references to the Black Lodge visually and symbolically.

If you've seen both the show and this movie you'd spot a couple references easily. Arquette basically doing the same thing as Sheryl Lee (playing 2 different characters, having the blonde one be a hooker) and the red curtain in Fred's bedroom.

Is it only mild references? that's a minor let down i was kind of hoping it would tie in a bit more to the overall mythology of both shows, is it true the mystery man is possibly a Black Lodge inhabitant on his own mission or is that another false rumour?

This whole film felt like it was set in the Black Lodge. If you've seen the show, you'll know that the Black Lodge is dark, frightening and surreal. In contrast, most of the scenes outside Twin Peaks where very quirky has had the same feeling as the film made after this, The Straight Story.
