Something to think about after viewing this film

When Fred and Renee leave the party, they have a discussion about Andy in the car. Fred shows his distaste for Andy when he calls him an @sshole. "Where did you meet that @sshole?".

Renee says she and Andy became friends at a place called Mokes and that Andy told her about a job. This establishes that Renee and Andy are friends.

Fred declares that Andy has some effed up friends.

When he says this we immediately associate this effed up friend with Mystery Man. However, if we go back to what Andy told Fred at the party, Andy said that he didn't know Mystery Man. They are not friends. Mystery Man is a friend of Dick Laurant.

So, who is the effed up friend of Andy's that Fred talks about in the car?

Fred likes to remember things his way. This effed up friend could be Renee, an obvious answer, or...

Since Fred likes to fool himself, this effed up friend could be himself. I mean, I eventually come to see Fred as a real whack job.

We also assume that the 'job' Renee talks about means employment...but there are other kinds of jobs. Bank jobs, stucco jobs, etc.

Alice told Pete about a stucco job. This scene is a complete lie...an act of diversion to displace blame. We know that Fred and Pete are the same guy. But if Andy told Renee about a job (a stucco job), what does this say? That Fred is lying. Andy is referred to as "dent head" by the detectives. Fred and Pete also have problems with their foreheads...hmmm. All three of them could be the same guy.

Remember...Mystery Man declared that he was in Fred's house right before Fred makes that call. Mystery man represents the truth. He is not in two seperate places. The two seperate places are one and the same. Mystery Man is in Fred's house. So is Fred. This house is actually Fred's. They are not at Andy's...well, they sort of are. Andy is also Fred. And this party is at Fred's. Andy and Fred being the same person explains why they both drive red convertible sports cars.

It also tells us that Fred told Renee about a job and that they met at a place called Mokes. (Mokes is an acronym for smoke...something we see on the stairs at the Madison's.)

Remember that photo Pete questions? He is so consumed with Renee's and Alice's images, but is ignoring the other images. The guys. They also tell a tale. A tale he doesn't want to remember. In it, Dick and Andy are the same. If that photo depicts a crude mirror of Alice and Renee, then the guys are mirrored, too.

One more thing: after Mystery Man shows a video to Dick, Dick begins "You and me, mister...". They are also the same person, Fred and Dick. This conclusion can already be drawn given the Mystery Man's statement at the party and the photo. If Andy and Fred are the same, and Andy and Dick are the same, then Dick and Fred are the same.

Mystery Man asks Fred what his name is. Fred doesn't answer. At this point, I'm not sure he even remembers anymore. We surely don't know.

We assume Pete is also Fred. But is he? I'm still inclined to think so, but it's quite possible that 'Renee' was cheating on 'Fred' with Pete and that Fred became him to see what Renee saw in him. What was Pete giving Renee that Fred wasn't, causing her to cheat? The fact that "on that night" Pete's parents saw Pete with a man they had never seen before tells me that Fred and Pete are two seperate people in reality. Dream Pete has a girlfriend, Sheila, who shares some traits with Renee...it is reality poking its head in on the fantasy. Could some of the things Sheila says reflect Renee's feelings? Things Renee said to Fred? Or is it more bull Fred tells himself to make himself look good? Hmmm...

This is my siggy. It appears, automagically, when I post.

I know that some time has passed since you posted this, but you made some brilliant observations- I actually considered the Fred is Andy idea, but not that Dick is also them... you spotted some great hints. Well done. Granted, we will never truly know, but like a typical Lynch film, it's all onion peelings and that's part of the fun.

Agreed. I'm definitely mulling this over next time I watch it.
