My experience tells me that people calling filmmakers pretentious tend to be pretentious pricks themselves.

Try reading and go to the theatre occasionally. You can't understand the meaning of pretentious crap unless you go to the theatre regularly. Of course acid helps. LSD. It's a puzzle. It's interactive. If a movie doesn't engage your imagination you may as well be watching an episode of friends.

I wouldn't say pretentious but maybe it is. It's obviously full of crap but I assume that it was made as if it were genuinely a good film idea.
Roger Ebert was right. Lost Highway is a shaggy ghost story. But people can still enjoy it, it's all subjective.
A movie about a guy who goes nuts and kills his wife, fancied up with Lynch staples? Blah. Some nice imagery though and Blake was creepy.
