Have you noticed these three things? (spoilers)

1)In the very beginning, when Fred is smoking a cigarette, we can see behind him a trail of blood on the floor and some blood splattered on the walls as well.
It suggests that he actually murdered his wife right before he received his own message "Dick Laurent is dead" on the intercom. How do you explain that?.

2)When Fred talks to the mystery man for the first time and calls his own home via the mystery man's cellphone, it takes two rings for the mystery man to pick up the phone at Fred's home.
Then, in the following scene, when Fred and Renee arrives home and Fred enter home alone in order to find out if there is someone there, the phone rings twice, and it seems like someone picks it up, just like when Fred calls home from the mystery man's cellphone and the mystery man picks the phone up after two rings. What do you think of that?.

3)Just after Fred says on the intercom "Dick Laurent is dead", he then drives away in Dick Laurent's car, and the detectives are on his tail with the sirens on.
If you listen very closely at the beginning of the movie, when he receives his "Dick Laurent is dead" message on the intercom, we can actually hear the car drives away with the detectives car chasing it with the sirens on.

Yes, good observations. I think you are spot on.

To be honest I never noticed the blood trails on the floor and wall in the first scene. Nice going! Yes, I believe Fred already has killed his wife before the first scene. In fact, we hear some noices like talking in the background and a door slam. I believe Fred has been put in a jail or perhaps he has returned to his jail after he has been interrogated by those detectives. This first scene is Fred's gradual escape into his own fantasy.

You are right about the police sirens we hear after Fred heard the words "Dick Laurent is dead" through the intercom in this first scene. This scene of course is a copy of the last scene except that it is being shown from the other side of the door. It is Fred himself who speaks these words into the intercom and that's why he cannot see anybody outside.

I'm sure you're right for #1 in that Fred has already killed Renee. Although I don't think it's blood reflected behind him. As he smokes he's sitting on his side of the bed, facing a mirror. In this mirror we see the bed reflected behind Fred and the bed's frame has a red/orange piece at the head of it. It can appear to look like blood in the reflection but is simply part of the bed.

There are photos in this blog that clarify my statement.

I'm sure I noticed the last two. Still, this is good stuff.

Very interesting indeed. You know what? I feel there are two different versions or more of this movie. The one I saw on Viceland the other night, seem totally different from the one I saw years ago on one of those premium stations. I guess I need to get the dvd.
