One of the last great action movies...

Don't get me wrong - it has it's flaws - but you can't help but appreciate the look and style of it. From the glorious widescreen 35mm photography, to the slow motion shootouts and use of practical effects. It's one of the last great examples in the american action film catalog before cgi and digital technology came in and changed the look and feel of the medium. And not to mention Shane Black's special brand of dialog...

"I'll shoot my dick off!"

"What are you a sharpshooter now?"

...this one's up there with Die Hard for best Xmas vacation movies.

Absolutely true. And one of the last movie in which Samuel L. Jackson still cared a little about acting.

reply

I think there's been some great ones since like Casino Royale, Skyfall, Dredd, The Raid: Redemption, Snowpiercer, Man on Fire, The Rundown, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Oh and also all of the new planet of the apes movies.

reply

Holy crap Dredd and Raid were amazing
Real action done right!!

reply

Planet of the Apes movies are not real action movies. They're more special effect movies, like Godzilla or Jurassic Park.

reply

Agreed. And I think its the humor that makes it special. Always wished there had been a sequel.

reply

Agree, this film had it all and then some. It had good action, suspense, humor, and interesting characters... and even spawned a conspiracy theory about 9/11.

After this film, we have:

The Matrix
The 13th Warrior
The Mummy
The Mask of Zorro
The Bourne Identity
Ip Man films
The Raid films
Apocalypto
Rurouni Kenshin films
Blade of the Immortal
Mad Max Fury Road
Etc etc

John Rambo a.k.a. Rambo (2008, the fourth film in the series)

Actionwise I'm not a big fan of The Matrix series. It was a breakthrough of artificial looking action scenes made in computer. In The Matrix it was justifiable, though, because the world was artificial. Now its standard of the industry. For example, Kingsman was an agony to watch (don't remember if I managed to finish it). Mission Impossible movies aren't much better in this regard.

reply

I loved Kingsman, the first one actually. And yes the last Rambo film was good as well.

I judge action films based on their subgenres so as a martial arts film, no way will I put The Matrix up there with The Raid at all.

reply

Kingsman 2 was utter terrible tho'. I couldn't even finish it. Turned it off while they were fighting in the car. The action scenes have no impact, just random scenes the director thought cool and stitched together for no reason.

And it must be said it is politics free. Even though she is a woman, we don't get beat over the head with it. It is just a fun film. And she is also believable/plausible as an assassin.
