Why Did Felina's GuardsTry to Kill Smith?

I have a question that has been bothering me.

Of course Smith wanted to find out where Doyle bodyguards were housing his slave/love, Felina. So Smith falsely suggested that some trigger men are comming to town and he should check on her. So Doyle let him get the information where 8 of his guys are watching her.

All Smith did, was walk into the dinning room, and ask....one question"Is the girl upstairs?" and every one of them tried to kill them the momment after he said that...... and he had to blast them all down.

What if they would have killed John Smith? Boss, Doyle would have said..."What the Hell did you guys do that for!...I sent him her to check on Felina!"

Doyle came to mascarce scene, and had no urge to kill Smith, even then?

Why did those 8 fools try to kill Smith? I don't understand it?

Either they had tense nerves or they became suspicious of him.
Their response is natural, since they had no knowledge of anyone coming to the safehouse and should suspect anyone arriving unannounced, knovn or stranger, of being a risk to the plan.
The answer to your other question is that the acting goes to extreme in this movie at times.
I just wonder about the eighth man.

They might have intended just to get the drop on him. It didn't work out the way they wanted it to.

I think you're reading the scene wrong.

I never once saw it as "Is the girl upstairs?". What Smith actually says is "The girl upstairs!" As in "She's mind and she's coming with me." The Guards immediately recognize this threat and attempt to kill him.

In the director's cut we learn that it is a game the guards liked to play, similar to the "Word of the Day" on PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE, where is some unknowing visitor to the playhouse said the word of the day, Pee Wee and all his playhouse pals would scream like crazy. Only with the guards, the game was "Phrase of the Day" and the phrase happened to be "Girl upstairs?" And instead of screaming and shouting, they'd jump up and kill whoever said it.

From what i remember. The gaurds were already out there when Smith decides to join Doyles gang. The 8 guys didn't know that smith had joined there side and figured he came to get the girl for whatever reason and they were instructed to not let anyone see or do anything involving the girl.
