Finn's exit from the film (SPOILER)

I've seen many films in my time, but out of all of the ridiculous reactions to being shot, Finn's is the number one most ridiculous in my book. Not only does he fly off his feet and backwards, but continues doing so for quite some time. He must have stopped twenty or so feet from where he was, practically on the other side of the street.

This is absolutely ludicrous. This doesn't happen in real life. In real life, he would have pretty much just dropped to the floor and nothing else. The bullet has no more force on its victim than the butt of the gun does on the hand that shot it. Newton's law -- Every action has an equal and opposite reaction -- but filmmakers tend to ignore this for the sake of action.

I think that making it look realistic would actually be more disturbing that what you see in so many movies. Falling to the floor and writhing in agony. People don't die instantly, either. Every one of Smith's victims died instantly when getting shot in pretty much any part of their body. But again, this happens in most movies.

Anyway, I just thought that Finn's death was so ridiculous I had to say something.

There are so many people out there that think that this is really what happens when someone gets shot. They think if someone gets shot with a shotgun they are going to land ten feet back. They would be surprised to find out, again, that they would just pretty much drop to their feet and writhe around for a while.

Oh well, it's only a movie.

"...filmmakers tend to ignore this for the sake of action."

And I'm glad they do!

Absolutely, but I think that in the action movies that are trying to actually mean something and say something, although those are few and far between, and Last Man Standing is definitely not one of them, the filmmakers would actually want it to be more realistic. To have more of an effect. Eh, perhaps it just that as I'm getting older I wish that action movies had a little more to them. Who knows?

I think Walter Hill was simply mixing the atmosphere of a traditional American gangster flick with John Woo/Hong Kong-style action, which is operatic and not necessarily starkly realistic or adherent to the laws of physics. It works for me.
