confused over how either gang made any money?

seeing as most of the towns inhabitants bar a few you see was that of both of the gangs and they where always fighting where on earth are they their and how are they making money it just seems like they are trying to control the town to make their own sort of empire which would be fine but all they seem to do their is operate a boot legging operation and stuff but this just seems utterly pointless. other than that its a great action film

I thought they were fighting over control of an easy access point between the US and Mexico for smuggling. Like today there is a battle between drug cartels and coyotes for smuggling points along the border with mexico. Sometimes today the smugglers force illegals to carry knapsacks of drugs as part of the price of getting into the US.

All for brain dead American drug addicts. Mexican law enforcement keeps saying without such a huge American demand there would be no supply from across the border.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

This movie has a number of problems and the gangs in this small town are part of it. Why can't either seem to bring in enough reinforcements to wipe out the other? During the film, Smith says that the Italian were winning in NY and Chicago (true in real history, too).

My best theory is that the gangs smuggle enough liquor to make themselves money but otherwise are like some ignored minor field office of some large corporation. They're just profitable enough to keep going but not profitable enough for anything else.
