Why is it so expensive?

It says it cost 67 million to make the movie. Why is it so expensive?

reply

They did it on purpose just so you could ask that question.

Actors Salaries: $22,000,000
Filming Expenses: $14,000,000
Bullets: $33,000,000

I think that adds up :).

Well damn!

You're not far wrong. That's a heck of a lot of squibs to set off.

reply

the easy answer is Bruce Willis. 16 Mill went to his salary alone.

I imagine the sets cost a pretty penny though----they had to build a lot just to get the right feeling.

I like the movie a really lot---but if it wasn't for Bruce they could've easily made it for half of what it cost. (then again Bruce IS the reason the movie got greenlighted and released in the first place!---you know a decade ago if he was interested in a script it got fasttracked for production.)

the white zone is for unloading passengers...

who shot who in the what now?

The sets, period cars and clothing, tons of guns and squibs, major star in lead. It adds up.

Who says violence is not the answer?

Don't forget location footage. Filmed in 4 places, none of which is a backstage. Lots of overtime, per-diem, and it kind of looks like they moved the same props (cars especially) to each location.
Plus, I think a lot of people at the time really respected Walter Hill, and didn't feel he'd ever been given a chance to make a big version of 'his style' of movie. And even though it doesn't seem to have made much at the Box Office at the time, Warners is famous for making movies that stand up to the test of time. This is certainly one of them that's made a fortune in DVD sales and TBS airings.

reply

Two of the four locations listed for it are Old West filming towns which already existed, so there wasn't much actual set construction needed, if any. Probably the remote locations eat up budget for housing and craft services but from what I've read a lot of these kinds of shooting locations have some kind of housing for the crew at least, probably with a group of trailers for the bigger cast and director.

Who knows where it all went -- Hill was an old hand by the time this picture was made and location shoots can absorb a lot of expenses, so maybe there's some "Hollywood Accounting" going on here and Hill was told to take his time so that a bunch of money could get pumped through vendors chosen by the producers and cutting out everyone who had some kind of below the line deal.

how the thought the could make money from this movie if it cost 66 million

reply

Look at who made this flick, dude has cash and pull... Also seems like there was a lot of fat on this flick, firing B-Stien like he did, and getting bruce such a big payday.

I feel like this seems like a LOT of money to spend on a movie like this, i always thought it was one of those slipped though the system movies, but really, it seems like it just got made cause the director has had to much success.

Duke Nukem forever spending, no?

PS- i have always REALLY liked this movie. I just had no idea it cost more than our lives.

Had is the right tense. This money spending/wasting ego trip binge apparently cost him his clout and career as well.

I love this movie too. Just rewatched it tonight. However, I definitely did a double take at the bduget. $67 million back in 1996 is just...ridiculous. Especially for a tale of gangware in a dusty, nowhere town.

reply

Stupidity is expensive. It costs a lot of money to make such stupid and obnoxious movies for such stupid people that would be stupid enough to rank this garbage as high as 6/10!

reply

Willis's salary!

Its that man again!!

My sentiments exactly. I love it too, but couldn't believe it had such a big budget back in 1996. Considering the type of movie it was, they would have always been hard-pressed expecting to get their money back, let alone make a profit.

Yo, Timberwolf,

There's a garbage hauling company in North Jersey, strictly legitimate, on the level, that could use a man of your accounting skills. Just knock at the back (the "Ladies Entrance", not the kitchen) of the Step On Inn at N. 28th in Cramer Hill. Ask Bobby at the bar for Fat Knobby (when you sit, DO NOT call him Fat Knobby.) It's Mr. Mike to you, until he gets to know you better, then you can call him Ponytail. (He used to have a ponytail in the 80s; everybody did, right?)

Tell him Educated Joe from RCA sent ya. Shouldn't be a problem. Just between you an' me, decline his first offer respectfully. Take the second offer, even if it's the same offer.

It is not, as yet, a well known fact that Knobby needs a new accountant, so keep it between the two of you, you know? I'd say on the down low, but that ain't what people think it means, in stir, y'know?

Alright, you're dying to know, Fat Knob is what Pony Mike's closest friends call him. It's short for FATher KNOws Best. So now you know, but it ain't for you. Yeah, I'm Joe from the RCA, in Camden. The Etaoin thing? First 12 letters in order of use. Keep that to yourself, too, it could mean trouble for me.

So just cook, uh, take care of the books for Mr. Mike, and maybe we'll meet in about 3-5, and everything will be cool, again.

Peace, Be Strong.

well the most went to bruce willis's overpaid pocket,
the locations didnt cost much..since they were obviously mostly old western-movies houses, and in america there is many old cars that is still availble + there is replicas (new cars with old skin applied to it), but every crewmember wants their salary, hotels costs..etc..

reply

They used the sets from Silverado for the most part, so it's not like they built it from scratch.

Are you saying every crewmember wanted a salary AND a place to stay? Probably food, too.
No wonder it costed money! Damn greedy working class.
