Why do you think this movie bombed?

I think its a great film one of Bruces best - so why did it flop?

I actually like the movie. I own the DVD. Having said that, I can understand why the critics hated it and why it didn't do well. I always thought the movie had a somewhat predictable plot and the dialogue was too shallow. Too many one liners. It also portrayed organized crime as pretty disorganized. It just seemed like there was way too much invested in the movie to allow that to happen.

I really liked the movie myself, but there were some glaring technical errors that bothered me. I'm a fan of shooting in general and handguns specifically, so I tend to notice when they really go out of bounds in movies. It would have bothered me if he had fired 13-14 rounds from those 7-rd Colt mags, but he was routinely going through 30 or 40 rounds before reloading! Makes my head hurt.

Other than that, I have to agree with the post above. It was also veeerrry slow in places.

PS: to counter the "infinite ammo" glitch, I really liked the 2-handed simultaneous reload. Very cool looking.

B/c its stupid, everyone in it talks way too much and the plot plays too fast.

that being said, it reminds me an awful lot of U-Turn, how funny, nothin's original in hollywood, male hero, whore woman

In the UK at least the critics took it very seriously, it was the main piece in the guardian G2 that weekend. Which was probably the main problem - the pulp element mixed with serious film making was no longer in vogue.

As a result, every perceived flaw was endlessly discussed. The voiceover, the lack of context for Smith, all were turned into weapons against a film that didn't appease lovers of Walter's earlier films (which were often now over-mythologised against their original box office showing) by critics who expected a more straight ahead actioner from him.

It's a masterpiece for me and the best post-western gunslinger there has ever been.

It's a decent movie, but the plot is rather pedestrian and indeed, as others have said there's too many plot holes and not enough explanation for why the various characters do what they do. That, and they went for a stylized atmosphere but it came off as boring and vacant rather than pulpy.

It bombed because it's a remake of two other movies, both of which are better. "Last Man Standing" is a remake of "Fistful of Dollars", which is a remake of "Yojimbo", which itself is adapted from a novel. Any time something is reworked that many times, it gets watered down. Not to say that I don't like "Last Man Standing", I do. Bruce Willis is always at his best when he's getting his ass kicked and shooting everything in sight. And Christopher Walken is, well, christopher Walken. But there's a difference between homage and rip-off, and this leans toward the latter.

I really have no idea!

Bruce Willis was at the top of his stardom and is perfectly cast; it has the great action director Walter Hill behind the camera; a great supporting cast; good Ry Cooder score; and when Bruce comes limping into the bar at the end and starts blowing everybody away... well, I must've seen that scene about 20 times. Really cool action sequences.

Why it bombed is one of the great mysteries.

I enjoyed the movie to a point, but I can see why it didn't catch on. As other commenters have noted, it feels shallow. I feel like all this amazing stuff has happened off screen to make the characters who they are, but you have no idea about any of it, and you can only guess as to how it came about. This movie, to me, feels oddly like Lucky Number Slevin and Sin City mashed together and made ten years earlier with a lack of backstory; weirder yet is that Bruce Willis is amazing in both of those movies.

I dunno..Like I said, I enjoyed the movie to a point, but it's not nearly as good as I expected it to be. I love Bruce Willis, but I think if you want to see a truly amazing film of his, watch Slevin.

Couldn´t agree more!

This is the movie I use when I´m demonstrating my home-cinema for visitors.
I can´t believe it wasn´t a huge success.

For me the off comments are unintentionally funny and pretentious and the gun fights are cheesy, because everyone seems to have at least one dozen of bullets in his magazines.
