I watched this film after the 2011 version

I haven't read the book yet but I'm planning on doing so.
First I watched the 2011 adaptation starring Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska, and I was so enchanted by their wonderful performances that my heart actually hurt. But I knew there was much to the story that it wasn't been told, as it is often the case when a novel makes it to the big screen.

So I decided to watch this film in hope it would give me another perspective. In many ways it did. Jane's childhood was a bit more developed in this 1996 version and so it was her relationship with Adele.

There were a couple more scenes between Jane and Rochester, I think, too.

However, I didn't "feel" their love and chemistry. The actress who played Jane was so emotionless! I guess Jane would've built a wall around her heart due to everything she suffered in her childhood, but this actress was way too cold.

I will have a better opinion once I read the novel.

I watched this recently and thought Charlotte was rubbish!! stiff and wooden plus why not stick with the book and cast a small actress as Jane was supposed to be petite, which in those days would have been under 5ft 2, Charlotte is 5ft 8!!

Charlotte G was buttoned up and uptight, I would not say she was precisely rubbish,however It's only my opinion.
5ft 2" was the average height for a Victorian lady.
I am 5ft 8" high,unfortunately I am also 5ft 8" in circumference!

I would have been idea to play Jayne back in my young days as I'm just 4ft 11. Im still waiting for a Mr Rochester though! lol

If you want to see a version that really develops the characters, fills in ALL the details and adheres closely to what the book said then you MUST watch the 1983 BBC mini-series with Timothy Dalton. That was outstanding and has been my favorite version. My one caveat is the actress who played Jane was extremely homely, and even though see did a good job, it was hard for me to imagine it's Rochester had an attraction for her.
