This is not one of the best animated Disney musicals of all time, it's one of the best animated films...period.
Breathtaking animation, well developed, charismatic characters, dark, daring themes, an incredibly vile villain, and the score rivals Disney's best and most beloved.
I truly believe this is Disney's (not Pixar) last masterpiece animated feature. I'm shocked it's aggregate rating is so low here on imdb.
There are too many great movies here that have low ratings. Granted, 6.7 isn't that low, but it deserves much higher than that. Anyway, it's just a measure of popularity, and we all know that popular doesn't necessarily equal good.
I have it rated at 9 for the moment, but I'm thinking of changing it to 10. My reasoning behind the change is the same reason I give Fantasia 2000 a rating of 10: the things that work well more than compensate for the things that don't. In fact, they completely overpower them, like the flavor of hot peppers completely overpowers whatever it is mixed with.
"good" is the measure of what a person think, "popularity" is the measure of what all those people together think in relation to one another.
I really love the people who try and act like they are somehow better than the general public. If it's popular, people liked it. Sorry if that hurts your feelings.
This movie's rating isn't even that bad. But besides IMDB doesn't publicly admit it's full metrics, so it can't be scrutinized anyway. But really who cares what number it gets. If people liked it and are still talking about it, it did it's job and is successful. Whether or not it is as popular or not to something else according to IMDB, is frankly irrelevant.
Not to mention it arguably contains Alan Menken's finest work. I know people talk about Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, but imho these have much more accessible popular styles are limited to one or two songs or tunes. The scores for Pocahontas and Hunchback of Notre Dame are vastly underrated but are the standard of movie scores. Several songs (not just one) in Hunchback are my all time favourites and themes like Sanctuary are just beautiful.
i rewatched this for the first time in years tonight. i'm amazed the score is so low. it's not perfect by any means, but like someone said the great parts are so great they overshadow the flaws.
Completely agree! And fortunately, the score is now up to a 6.9, so at least it's increasing! :) I gave it a 10 because it is one of my favorite films, and I think it is just beautiful and perfect.
