Why was Angelique dubbed?
Why was Angelique's voiced dubbed with an American actress's voice?

shareMy guess is the same reason the British actors in Hellraiser 1 were dubbed, to give the film more appeal to a US audience.

That reason doens't really follow as she was cas to be a character of french origin though. I do wonder if, even after the reshoots, they wanted more extensive changes in dialogue done and couldn't get her to do it... or just soem stupid reason like thought the American accent was scarier or soemthing.

Watching the work print I wouldn't say Valentina Vargas was the best actress in the world but her original performance is far preferable to the dubbed one. It's been a while since I saw the released version but if I remember right they still kept her voice slightly affected in a French way to keep the character's origin, but like a kind of panto, American-ised style of french. Or maybe it was just the way the phrasing was so awkward to fit the original delivery. The dialogue changes also make sense as you say, I did note some offscreen dialogue was added to the 'finished' version as well to try and put a bandaid over the plot holes. Possibly it was just done as a matter of clarity, which is what I meant when I said appeal to a US audience. 'Never underestimate the general public' or however that phrase goes. I think back when HR1 came out it was more of a standard practice to dub foreign (in that case, British) accents over, hence the confused geography of the first two films being set in a Britain populated by Americans with disjointed voices. Shame we'll probably never get to see a workprint with the original performances for the first one.
