Whoopi's Performance

I personally think she did a great job in this movie. For a change she played it straight and showed us what she really can do. It's a real shame that throughout her career she has been under estimated as a serious actress. I guess you can't have both comedy and drama in Hollywood, huh?

I don't think she's that underestimated, I mean she won an Oscar for Ghost in '90, was nominated for an Oscar in her first big role '85 for the Color Purple (which was great!). If that doesn't get her some "serious actress" points, I don't know what would.

I highly recommend seeing and reading The Color Purple.

Although Whoopi Goldberg has "done a great job" in other movies, she certainly did not, in this one. Maybe that's director Reiner's fault; I don't know. But Myrlie Evers is/was nothing like she was portrayed in this film.

Yup, she did do a pretty good job. However, I did think that she actually looked younger in 1990 than in 1963. It wouldn't have been difficult for the make-up department to have given her a few wrinkles, a grey hair or two, and it would have added an extra layer of realism to the film.

Whoopi has never been my cup of tea, but I thought she was fantastic in The Long Walk Home. For comedy Siter Act and obviously Ghost were great. The only other movie she was good in was The Color Purple.

hmmm. I assume you've seen all 93 of Whoopi's movies? How else would you know that The Color Purple was her only other good movie...?

Jumpin Jack Flash was hilarious. And Corrina, Corrina is a great little film. She's perfect in it, dramatic and comedic.

My favorite role of hers. Just a smiiiidge over "Color Purple".

Whoopi was very good in this film...this is the closest she has come to matching her performance in THE COLOR PURPLE.

I didn't think she was that good. It didn't seem to be a great performance, since she spends most of it on the phone with DeLaughter doubting he's doing his job. I don't think this film does a good job at showing who Evers was and his family's fighting to get justice. It shows too much from DeLaughter's side.

You do realize you did not give a single reason as to why you thought the performance was not great, right? Despite commenting on which aspects or areas of the character were explored more or less than you thought they should be, as well as what you think the film should have been more about, you did not make a single comment on why you didn't think Whoopi's performance was great.

JFYI

I for one thought she was the worst actor in this movie. Her performance was flat and fake. Only her adult kids in the movie seemed to be as bad at acting as her.

To each his own, I guess, I thought both she & Woods were the highlights of this film.

I like Whoopi in her comedies, but she was very wooden here. Someone on another thread said that Baldwin's performance was wooden, but I think the real wooden performance in the film was Whoopi.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

Whoopi has always been amazing actress, it's just that some of her work is often overlooked with the obvious exception of The Color Purple, Ghost, and Sister Act. Her performance in Homer & Eddie and Boys on the Side is quite haunting (I always get teary eyed at the close end of the movie where her and Mary-Louise Parker singing the piano version of Roy Orbison's You Got It). She was also amazing in The Long Walk Home, Sarafina, and Girl, Interrupted.
