Yeah I was gonna post this too... Neither is the third husband, the guy from 7th heaven.
shareIt's funny as elizabeth berkley had done showgirls her only film and was in it.
But sjp had done hocus pocus in 93/94 and was third billed or second billed after bette midler. She was also in footloose and flight of the navigator n the 80s people knew who she was as a supporting acress who mainly did comedy i guess.
I'm thinking maybe her role was originally 1 or 2 scenes but got beefed up, dunno.
Elizabeth Berkley was a more marketable/recognizable name during that time period, which is probably why she was listed in the credits. Her role in Saved By the Bell turned her into the one actress to watch from cast when the series ended. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned for her when Showgirls flopped. You also have to remember that Showgirls was released the year before and she would still be receiving press attention from that role, regardless of how many films she appeared in at that point.
SJP could have received an opening credit because of previous films, but I don't think her popularity at the time could pale in comparison to the other actors and actresses (same things goes for Stephen Collins). It could be said she had something similar to the sort of fame Buscemi had in the 90s. He was a recognizable face, but he wasn't well-known by name.
Yeah, if they had waited 3 more years and done it with her as a major support role, it would have worked out much better, as SATC was HOT as was SJP at the time.
shareI also wondered this! SJP had quite a bit of scenes too!
shareI felt that her role was just a small part, qualifying no more than minor supporting actor. You should focus on what the title is telling you ie "First Wives Club" where the focus is on the major characters, the wives and their spouses.
The producers had it right. These days of celebrity, it would be reversed. Such is the pathetic state of affairs with Hollywood, even the most wooden, talehtless 'celebrity' gets top billing. Lots of digital effects, cgi enhanced movies with top of the line video and audio trickery to make idiotic celebrities appear glamourous and platable to gullible juvenile audiences. It kind of explains why there are major talented actors doing first class television rather than what passes for Hollywood blockbusters that are churned out so quickly these days, that these films become all but forgotton two weeks after release.
