What did he wait a long time for?
What exactly did De Niro wait a long time for?

He waited a long time to give Bobby (Wesley Snipes) his best pitch, which he didn't get to give him on the beach earlier in the movie.
takes Kenndy.
All I've ever wanted was an honest week's pay for an honest day's work
My take is that he has no idea what he "waited a long time" for, because he looks lost when Bobby finally asks the important question. "What do you want from me?!"
I think what he really wanted was to make Bobby care about the game as much as he did through his sick "game", something that only made sense to his insane mind. In the end he just gives up and gets himself shot, he realized it was over and that he'd taken all the wrong turns.
My take is that he has no idea what he "waited a long time"I think the answer is that he waited a long time (i.e. his whole life) for significance, respect, importance, etc. So you're right in that he didn't know in a tangible sense. I just think Bobby's character had a great deal of emptiness, which brought him to breaking point when the only things he had left - his career and his family - were taken from him (through no one's fault but his own, of course).
