Who's the 'busybody' in the Stanford hat?

That old lady is watching him when he goes to opening day then shows up later when they get back. Was she paid to follow him? She couldn't have known where he was sitting since he got a scalped ticket. Any theories?

I'm watching "The Fan" right now. The busybody appears to be yet another spectator at the game who is concerned after seeing Dad screaming obscenities at everyone and leaving the boy alone at the game. She's later shown sitting in the little boys mother's house so it appears that she drove him home.

I guess that's the best explanation I could come up with. But doesn't it seem a little strange that a total stranger would just take the boy and drive him home, assuming he even knew how to get home from Candlestick Park? Then when DeNiro comes to the house, she's just hanging out there having some tea with her new friends? Maybe this is a small detail, but it's been keeping me up at night. Okay, maybe it doesn't bother me that much....

reply

I think this explanation makes perfect sense. At the ball game they showed the woman with a concerned look on her face, what with DeNiro behaving irresponsibly in front of the young boy. The boy is left alone and she obviously would have noticed that. Then the game ends and the boy is undoubtedly looking around for Dad. The woman sees this and takes the youngster by the hand - she is hardly a threat - and manages to get him home. She is thanked by the mother and is offered tea or whatever.

thanks for clearing that up,it could have been done better

the game wasn't over, he goes back during the game and there are still people around

I thought it was glaringly obvious what happened. In fact it was even obvious to Gil, because as soon as he sees his son gone, and he looks to where the "busy body" was sitting, he sees her seat empty too, and then he immediately goes to his ex's.

I used to get rides from people I didn't know all the time when I was young. And I was 13 when this movie came out, so I don't think it was far fetched or even slightly unbelieveable.

that busy body needed to mind her own f.uckin business or else Gil woulda knocked her head into the outfield.

reply

I'm surpised Gil didn't go after her.

reply

I would have. You dont just snatch up somebodys elses kid. i could see if the game was over but she grabbed him in like the 7th inning. She needed to have her nosy ass locked up.

reply

You dont just snatch up somebodys elses kid.

She didn't "snatch" him, she drove him home after seeing him get verbally and physically abused and finally abandoned.

I can't believe I'm defending this terrible, stupid movie.

reply

Wtf are you talking about? She did snatch him. DeNiro was rude, but so many spectators ay sports games are. The old shrew was being a nosy bitch who should've minded her business. Like the OP, I can only imagine she was sent by that kunt of a mother.

lol lets all lay off the old lady.

she seemed like a sweet grandma.

reply

Are we sure she wasn't a grandmother? I would have to assume it's Tim--the new husband's--mother. I'm thinking the mother sent her to the game to watch out for her son, because remember the mother saying she didn't like the idea and trust it.

Just my thought, but either way you slice it: WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT YOU BUSYBODY!?!?!?!?!

reply

It's also possible she waited with the kid for his mother to pick him up and she just went with them.

Even *if* the mom/stepdad sent a spy they would not have been able to predict where Gil and the child would sit. Remember Gil bought the tickets from a scalper.

The woman was just a helpful stranger.

Cunnilingus?

reply

I fell out of my seat when I read your post - LOL you assume that the "whatever" could have meant cunnilingus. OMG!!! Youre so retarded!

As others have said, I don't believe she had any connection to the family. I think she just became concerned after witnessing Gil's behavior and decided to get Richie home safely after Gil left. I'm sure at some point she came over to Richie and asked if he was OK or scared or something along those lines

Richie may have gone to a lot of games with Gil in the past and knew the route to and from Candlestick Park. Perhaps they called his mom, explained the situation and she gave the OK for the lady to give Richie a ride home. Or as another poster mentioned, she came to pick him up and gave the old lady a lift too as a thank you gesture

Most children that age know their address, and that's all Richie would really have to tell the woman and she could find her way there (ask for directions, or just recognize what neighborhood it's in, etc.) Granted, this movie predates the GPS, but I'll bet she could've managed just knowing the address.

reply

You're right. Busybodies are especially keen on knowing where neighborhoods are.

She's just a fan who notices that Gil has been acting obnoxious, and has then left the kid alone, and takes responsibili
ty for taking him home.

reply

OP, what a keen observation and intriguing discussion you've brought up. If the popular theory is correct, she is clearly more of a Good Samaritan than Pitt's Chad in Burn After Reading.

But, if she really was just a stranger...wouldn't she have asked the boy if his dad was coming back? Of course the answer would have been yes. That's really not nice to do to Gil, even if he trampled the boy a bit to get to that foul ball and left him for what amounted to a few innings before she whisked him away.

reply

Was it ever explained why Gil didn't just take him with him and have him wait in the car during the meeting?

reply

Well... Maybe an older female doesn't think in the same fashion as a younger male.

I'm not taking anyone's kid ANYWHERE before I talk to a "responsible" family member. Even before the fantastic proliferation of cell phones, there should have been working pay phones handy.

Call the child's home with your concerns, find out from the mother that she wasn't crazy about the idea of her son attending the game, anyway. Thereafter, let Mom decide what she wants done!

gil seems to be more of a cal-berkeley guy.
