That old lady is watching him when he goes to opening day then shows up later when they get back. Was she paid to follow him? She couldn't have known where he was sitting since he got a scalped ticket. Any theories?

I'm watching "The Fan" right now. The busybody appears to be yet another spectator at the game who is concerned after seeing Dad screaming obscenities at everyone and leaving the boy alone at the game. She's later shown sitting in the little boys mother's house so it appears that she drove him home.

I guess that's the best explanation I could come up with. But doesn't it seem a little strange that a total stranger would just take the boy and drive him home, assuming he even knew how to get home from Candlestick Park? Then when DeNiro comes to the house, she's just hanging out there having some tea with her new friends? Maybe this is a small detail, but it's been keeping me up at night. Okay, maybe it doesn't bother me that much....
shareI think this explanation makes perfect sense. At the ball game they showed the woman with a concerned look on her face, what with DeNiro behaving irresponsibly in front of the young boy. The boy is left alone and she obviously would have noticed that. Then the game ends and the boy is undoubtedly looking around for Dad. The woman sees this and takes the youngster by the hand - she is hardly a threat - and manages to get him home. She is thanked by the mother and is offered tea or whatever.

I thought it was glaringly obvious what happened. In fact it was even obvious to Gil, because as soon as he sees his son gone, and he looks to where the "busy body" was sitting, he sees her seat empty too, and then he immediately goes to his ex's.
I used to get rides from people I didn't know all the time when I was young. And I was 13 when this movie came out, so I don't think it was far fetched or even slightly unbelieveable.

As others have said, I don't believe she had any connection to the family. I think she just became concerned after witnessing Gil's behavior and decided to get Richie home safely after Gil left. I'm sure at some point she came over to Richie and asked if he was OK or scared or something along those lines
Richie may have gone to a lot of games with Gil in the past and knew the route to and from Candlestick Park. Perhaps they called his mom, explained the situation and she gave the OK for the lady to give Richie a ride home. Or as another poster mentioned, she came to pick him up and gave the old lady a lift too as a thank you gesture

Most children that age know their address, and that's all Richie would really have to tell the woman and she could find her way there (ask for directions, or just recognize what neighborhood it's in, etc.) Granted, this movie predates the GPS, but I'll bet she could've managed just knowing the address.

OP, what a keen observation and intriguing discussion you've brought up. If the popular theory is correct, she is clearly more of a Good Samaritan than Pitt's Chad in Burn After Reading.
But, if she really was just a stranger...wouldn't she have asked the boy if his dad was coming back? Of course the answer would have been yes. That's really not nice to do to Gil, even if he trampled the boy a bit to get to that foul ball and left him for what amounted to a few innings before she whisked him away.
Was it ever explained why Gil didn't just take him with him and have him wait in the car during the meeting?

Call the child's home with your concerns, find out from the mother that she wasn't crazy about the idea of her son attending the game, anyway. Thereafter, let Mom decide what she wants done!
