why couldnt they use paralyzed people for their testing?
not sure if anybody asked but couldnt they do studies with people already paralyzed? or was risk of death possible with people already paralyzed?

shareThere was obviously a risk of death. At one point when he was talking over the loudspeaker, Gene Hackman said that he was "growing nerves. We just have to get them to stop. They're overgrowing." That sounds to me like the cord nerves were regenerating and reattaching, but they were "overgrowing". Frankly, I think that would cause further cord compression and lead to more neurological problems as mild as numbness and as serious as paralysis.
However, with the 2 test subjects we saw, they obviously had regenerated motor skills (of varying degrees....Baldy didn't look like he had as good control as Teddy), but the seizure-stuff doesn't really fit any other pattern. I was wondering if it was infection from the hardware, but I think that would be reasonably easy to control, especially for a smart guy like Gene Hackman.
It just made an interesting story.
