The final scene -Possible Spoilers-

The final scene really struck me. I was quite surprised by the whole film, and was taking it at face value the whole way through. The final scene, though, I thought was shocking, beautiful, and really validated the rest of the film. The line: "maybe next time," was almost heartbreaking in a way as you see how real this is for these people. I may need to watch it again, but I wasn't exactly sure what whether he was referring to climax or death, but as I was viewing it I felt like that wasn't as important as the longing and desire that consumes these people.

Nice line ddmaingot, especially the 'longing and desire that consumes'.

If you recall the early scene of the Ballards on their balcony where they're talking about their extramarital sexual encounters, Catherine uses the "maybe next time" line, implying that "maybe next time" their sexual experiences will be more. "More" what? More gratifying, more intense, more moving, more everything. When she says after the final car crash that she's alright she sounds almost disappointed and a tear rolls down her cheek. Her husband says, "Maybe next time," as a way of comforting her. Maybe the next time will be everything she hoped the first time would be. I agree it was a beautiful ending.

"Maybe next time,"
As if they were trying for a baby.
