DVD Commentary -Question-

I read a review that makes mention of a commentary from Cronenberg about what this film might have been like had it been made by Hollywood. I think a commentary on this film would be a great accompaniment to the disc. The review was from 1997 so it may have been referencing a laser disc release. However, the it was referred to as a Criterion. Checking Criterion's website, they do not have the film. Now I am curious as to whether it may have been brought up on a commentary track from another picture. Any thoughts?

The commentary had been included on Criterion's out-of-print Laserdisc. The picture quality was reportedly weak, though.

I've got the Criterion LaserDisc, and the transfer was actually pretty good - to my eyes, it was better than the UK DVD, which was released early in the format's lifespan when compression technology, etc, wasn't quite as good. Also, the LaserDisc had a richer and 'punchier' AC3 soundtrack than the DVD's Dolby Digital mix.

I'd love to see the film get an updated DVD release, or a Blu-ray release.

Cronenberg has a calm, soothing voice that genuinely makes for interesting listening.

Some kind soul recorded me the commentary. It's wonderful.

Having said that, a movie that upset so many people will probably never see a 2 disc edition......

......which sucks.

I have to say, anyone with even a passing interest in this film, has to hear the Cronenberg commentary.

There is a region 2 special edition of Naked Lunch from Optimum which came out a few years ago which has a solo DC commentary. I don't have the Criterion version yet but I gather Peter Weller is on the comm as well; presumably they were recorded seperately for Criterion comm but it's possible the r2 disc is a new DC comm, or the unedited Criterion one. Although posibly it's neither, I haven't listened to it in a while so it's probably just the criterion one with gaps where Weller used to be.

If you really, really want a copy of the DVD with a director's commentary, PM me and I have a homemade version with the Criterion LD commentary attached/synched to the U.S DVD. I can post a copy.

They really should have released a DVD complete with this, but in its absence, a pirate will have to do.

The Criterion Blu-ray release lists a 1997 director commentary track with David Cronenberg.
