Creepy erotic film. Expect many *beep* per minute

I was quite surprised to see almost 5 different (unfinished) sex scenes in the first 7 minutes (!!!) of the film. Then I realised what kind of film this really was. To me, it's basically a depiction of the novelist's (yes, there's a book) sexual fantasies which involve gross deviance, adultery, homosexuality, death and injuries caused by car crashes. The film is a sequence of all sorts of sex scenes, mildly based on a story, between all characters till the point they find mutual sexual compatibility. The two main characters, although married, are clearly not compatible sexually as they both fantasize about other people and in the end they commit consented adultery.
I would like to hear opinions about the book this film is based on. Is the book as erotic as the film? Is it like a creepy version of 50 shades of grey?

Firstly let me say that Ballard's novel has no similarity to the trashy book you mention in the same sentence.

The novel is a hard read because it is written in a mix of normal language and mechanical discourse. It explores the relationship of humans to technology and the effect the latter has upon human relationships. The film is more erotic than the book and that's partly to do with beauty of the two lead actors. But the film, like the novel, goes beyond the erotic and I'm not sure that it's about characters finding sexual compatibility ...

I would not recommend Ballard's novel to anyone who likes 50 Shades of Grey.
