Script problems..?

This film starts well with a simple premise and decent characters, but then things get muddled.

Like, didn’t the witches find it odd that only when Sarah joined their coven did their spells actually start working? Nobody remarked on this. We saw Nancy getting increasingly pissed that Sarah was more naturally gifted, but the other two didn’t react.

Then Nancy does have powers after all and summons Moloch (or whoever), becomes more powerful and turns into a psycho bwitch. I can get her going nuts, but why do the other two turn into bitches too? Literally at the end they’re trying to kill Sarah - why?

Rochelle started to feel guilty about her hair-falling-out spell on that blonde racist, but then forgets all about it and goes full bitch. Why?

Sarah went to the book store and was about to summon Moloch but aborted it mid spell and ran away. Why did she do that? What would have happened if she had summoned him? Did she even need to given that she was naturally gifted?

At the end Rochelle and Bonnie arrive to make peace with Sarah, but then they’re snickering away at her loss of powers (until Sarah shows them they’re wrong via tree branch). Why are they still being bitches to their once-friend?

I also found it weird that the film never ‘digested’ Chris’ death. Let’s see what his best friends and the school have to say about him falling out of a window. The fact that he was alone in a room with two witches he’d previously spread shitty rumours about would surely raise questions, as would all the screaming and noise before his plummet 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah, smells like the script was rewritten during shooting and the finished film doesn't quite cohere. Compared to Scream it’s quite a mess (and is poorly shot with ropey effects).

well they're teenage girls. The film is designed to appeal to a teen audience

No, they assumed their success came because now they had a Fourth.

Sarah criticized them in the car and threatened their powers by suggesting she might leave them.

Bonnie and Rochelle never came to make peace with Sarah. It was a fishing expedition to see if they could use her to get their power back.

I'm less certain. After Nancy went insane and was institutionalized, Sarah was the closet they had to a friend other than each other. Both Rochelle and Bonnie were outsiders in their own school and thought Sarah could at least understand them - all three having experienced power and then losing it. I also think Bonnie and Rochelle were led down the dark path by Nancy's influence - if they never met her, they wouldn't be nearly so insufferable.

So I think they took a good faith shot at friendship that backfired.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

reply

But Sarah was the most powerful and she wasn’t corrupted.

reply

Nothing is 100%, but it explains Rochelle's behavior.

Sarah was also corrupted a bit by her newfound power - maybe not to the level of the others but she cast a love spell on Chris, not to win him as her boyfriend, but specifically to torment him - which she did. The spell indirectly cost him his life.

Imagine if she cast a love spell on you, to make you fall in love with your dad’s dick.

What would you do?

reply

My dad died in 2003, but even if he was alive, I don't think any spell could make me behave like you.

reply

I’m sorry to hear that, but the question still stands.

What would you do?

reply

I guess I would have to channel you to answer that question because the spell wouldn't work with me.

reply

In this hypothetical nobody can resist Sarah’s spells.

What would you do?
