Death Cell Question.

Near the end of the movie we see a doctor entering the cell & then we see Sam has had a tube inserted in his chest in the next scene. Why was this procedure carried out, surely the gas would kill him without the tube?

Since the presence of a doctor at executions is to determine whether the person has died, I would say he had hooked up some devices that would monitor heart rate, blood pressure, something like that. But I'm not that well studied on the whole process.

The tube hooks up to a stethoscope. It allows the doctor to listen to the heartbeat and determine when the condemned is dead, and conclude the execution.
