The reason this movie flopped?
Broderick in the cast. He should've been the brother that got shot. Stiller playing his role would've really helped the reviews of this film.

shareI think it was PERFECT. Fantastic gem from the 90s.
The reason it flopped, IMO, was not only because it was a slightly darker comedy, but because there was hype about Jim Carrey's historic $20 million paycheck: people were expecting Dumb and Dumer and Ace Ventura, cheer-me-up-by-making-me-laugh-uncontrollably type material, but got more dark and twisted fare.
I don't get why it flopped nor do I get why this film has a 5.9 rating on here.
This movie was by far Jim's best movie ever. Far surpassing his "classics" like "The Mask" or "Ace Ventura". This movie was a hilarious dark comedy. And in my life, it is one of the most quotable films of all time. I can't tell you how many times I quote this film....especially with Jim's character having that annoying over the top lisp It made everything he said sound ridiculous.

I think the main reason it flopped was because people went in expecting a fun, bright and silly Jim Carrey movie like Ace Ventura or The Mask. And The Cable Guy ended up being fairly dark by comparison. I can see how that would put a lot of people off the film.
What flop are you talking about? This movie made almost 103 million.

Although Stiller was the director, as an actor he was less known than Broderick at the time, especially outside of the USA.
Its that man again!!

I think it was the film's darker tone and pretty much the beginning of Jim Carrey backlash that this film pretty much flopped.
