20th Anniversary

20 years ago today on June 14th, 1996, The Cable Guy was released. I guess not too many people are celebrating this anniversary but it's hard to believe it's been so long ago now!

Do you think the movie has improved with age? I don't mind it and I appreciate the darker hints to the comedy but it definitely has some major problems.

I've always been rather fond of it. Not sure what the major problems are with it. Maybe it seems a bit less sophisticated, by today's standards. But the message remains, even if it's moved on to social media and the little mobile media addicts in the place of the classic fixed TV. But now all those vain kids are more like Chip, alienated and seeking other people, strangers on social media, to define and validate them.

Today's standards? You're kidding, right?

Please give some examples of today's standard of sophisticated humor.

Even if you can, what does it matter anyway? If something can make alot of people laugh then does it really matter if what type of humor it is?

I absolutely cannot stand pretentious comedy snobs. If people have a natural inclination to laugh at something "lowbrow" or "slapstick" then what's the problem?

It's human nature to chuckle at such things but some people will make a conscious effort to not laugh at such things or feel the need to remind others and themselves that they're actually above such humor. I cannot associate with anyone like that in real life. Those people are usually nowhere near as smart and sophisticated as they'd like to think they are anyway.

I love this movie ! Watched it 20 years ago and fell in love with it. Now, 20 years later, it has aged well. Still a classic !
Severely underrated and Jim Carrey gives the performance of a lifetime.

I, too, consider this to be a classic. It has aged very well over the past 20 years, and I still find it a treat to watch, even if the technology is a bit outdated.

I honestly can't believe how far we have progressed as a society. I remember the good old days when a few crooked cable installers would actually program analog boxes to descramble the channels. Nowadays, everything's digital and has to be dealt with by their customer service center.

There is one thing that does hold true in this movie that I will never forget: Cable technicians are hardly ever on time, even to this day! This is why they give such expansive time frames now (i.e. 1 P.M. to 5 P.M.). They even promise that installation is free if they're late, but they wait until the last possible minute before arriving.

Ah, it's completely underrated. This was probably around the peak of Jim Carrey's career. It's such a shame that there was never a Blu-ray release.
