You were very obviously mis-informed by someone who knows nothing about lesbians or women in general. The "sex scene" fit within the context of the movie. It's artistic, enveloping, and meant to convey the connection between these two people. They've found the other halves of each other, and with that they are bound by something magnetic, magical, otherworldly: something that people like them don't think exists until they find it in each other. There doesn't need to be an expounding amount of gratuity here, as the character simply need to look at each other and the connection is there.
The kind of scenes you seem to want can be found on countless porn sites. Wish I had some to recommend.

If your criterion for a good sex scene is visible boob, you're probably in the wrong place.
If you're genuinely perplexed, you may have seen an edited version of the film. The film loses a lot without the hot sex. Or maybe you're looking for a straight-guy interpretation of lesbians. 'Cause damn. This is hot lesbian sex.
