Lane was promoting the Mike Nichols film The Birdcage with Robin Williams in 1996 on The Oprah Winfrey Show when Oprah tried to get him to talk about his sexuality. "We had to discuss this beforehand and I said, 'I'm not ready to discuss whether I'm gay or not with Oprah. I can barely deal with meeting Oprah, let alone telling her I'm gay,'" the actor told The Hollywood Reporter's It Happened in Hollywood podcast. Lane ended up wiggling out of the question with the help of Williams.

Interesting article, beyond the oprah moment.

A gay man who just played a trail-blazing gay character and he wouldn't even tell the world he was one. Of course he was gay, just look at him.

Sad he buckled and used the word fag in the movie if he didn't like the slur. And then some guy called him a faggot after it. Facebook have given me bans in the past for using that naughty word lol

Sean Hays never discussed his sexuality during the original run of Will & Grace. He caught hell for it from some. He felt it was his own personal business.
