Were Armand and Albert together when he slept with Katherine?

It's been a while since I I've seen this so I don't remember whether or not this was covered in the movie. Were Armand and Albert already in a relationship when Armand had his "fling" with Katherine? In other words, was Val a result of Armand cheating on Albert? Or was Armand's relationship with Katherine before he met Albert? If they were together at the time, it might explain a lot of Albert's paranoia about Armand leaving him. Or maybe it is purposely left ambiguous. Anyone have any insight?

During her meeting with Armand, Katherine asks him if he and Albert are still together.

The impression I got was that Katherine wasn't a one night stand nor a girlfriend but as a friend had been asked to be a surrogate (perhaps through a sperm donation from Armand) for the child Armand and Albert wanted (otherwise why would she just hand Val over and not even really desire to see him?).

Yes, it's slightly obvious that she has a vague attraction to Armand, but that's more or less normal. If she had ever really loved Armand, or been truly infatuated with him, she would have never given him the baby, as it would be her only real tie to him.

I always thought that Val was a result of the one night stand that Armand and Katherine had. She was obviously hot for his bod and he was a tad curious about sex with a woman. I don't think that she was intentionally a surrogate.

I do find it sad to believe that there are people in the world who would essentially "sell" their child.

No they weren't, from what it sounds like they were in high school or possibly college and slept together, she got pregnant, apparently Armand had money and gave Katherine money in exchange for her to give up her rights to her son. He probably knew Albert at the time or met him soon after since it seems Albert was there from the beginning to help raise Val. Maybe he came into the picture while Katherine was pregnant.

They specifically discuss how they had sex in the past. She paid the doorman 20 dollars to get into his room and he came in and found her in his bed. He said he thought, what the hell, let's try it with a woman and see what those straight guys are raving about. Then she says, and how long did we last? He says, I remember exactly, from 2:30 - 3:45 AM(I'm guessing about the exact time he said), two times. She also tells him the money he gave her started her business, he should have gotten stock for it. He says, I got Val for it. I'm assuming she got a large gift of money from him to carry the baby to term and hand over custody to him.

They discuss the one night stand in the movie. Katherine bribed the doorman to let her into Armand's room and Armand decided to "try it once with a woman and see what all the fuss was about."

I'm pretty sure Armand makes the comment about how he wanted yo see "what all the straight guys were raving about", and the way they talk about the hook up it sounded like it just happened as a result of working together.

It might seem strange that she wanted nothing to do with her own son, but that is also mentioned as she was very young and career minded- not wanting to be tied down by having a child. It happens a lot when people don't intend to get pregnant, that's why there are adoptions and foster homes.

Katherine also makes a comment about not being very maternal, meaning she didn't have it in her to raise Val which is why she gave him up to Armand.
