The original film implied the Senator was an abusive monster.

Do you think The Birdcage did the right thing by softening up his character? I felt it did. His cruel, abusive tendencies somewhat ruined the comedic aspects of the original film, though I did like it when Albin/Albert suddenly yells at him in a deep booming voice when he's about to strike his daughter.

...When they found her, she was still smiling.

I simply ADORE this movie.

They softened the two gay lead characters as well. In the scene where Albert gets on top of Armand and eggs Armand on to "hit me. I know you want to. Go ahead, hit me." Armand grabs his face and pushes him away. In the original movie, La Cage Aux Folles, the Armand character DID punch his partner.

We call that domestic abuse.

So, I'm glad they did soften the characters.

"Can you keep a secret? Can you know something and never speak of it again?"

if you tell someone to hit you, you can't then complain if they do.
