Well, at least both sides were close-minded and intolerant

One thing I give credit to is that both Senator Keeley AND Armond are shown as being closed-minded and intolerant during most of the movie.

Yet both men seemed to learn something about the other as they BOTH had to somewhat walk in the other one's shoes by pretending to be something they weren't. It made for a very fun movie to watch.

I loved how the movie exaggerated the sterotypes of all the adults. All the actors did an amazing job, but Nathan Lane and Gene Hackman were standouts IMO.

1996 release. Hollywood was working with fire. Both "sides" could be seen as redeemable if both sides could be exposed as guilty. I don't know whether to boo Hollywood for relying on this old, tired tactic, or salute them for helping to nudge conservative legislators toward tolerance.

I don't understand why Armond had to be "tolerant" of something that was directly affecting and hurting his life.

Why should we tolerate the intolerant? Armand does nothing to harm the senator or the far right. But the religious right is plenty harmful to him and his lifestyle choices. Why should he (and we) tolerate that?

No one, whether LGBT or otherwise, should be expected to pretend someone "might have a good point" about discrimination. One day journalists and politicians who treated this as as an issue with two equally valid "points of view" will regret what they did.

Already, viewing this today, nineteen years later, one can almost see the Goldmans feeling no need to "hide" Albert or their sexuality. We aren't quite there yet, but we're getting close to make something so apparent to everyone back then being a nonissue today. Of course, then there's no story, and the story is very entertaining and well acted.

At least there will be plenty implied.

WTF was Armand "intolerant" about? Having to play straight so some senator "accepts" him? Horse crap.
