Was the focus-puller smoking something?

This was a cute little movie, well-composed and interestingly paced. But I have never, in my entire life, seen a movie so badly out of focus. And I don't think it was the DVD because some scenes were in focus and others weren't, and some were in focus in the wrong places, and some had improperly shallow depth of field. Anyway, what's up with that?

If so then apparently an entire room full of people all needed the eye doctor at once.

Maybe it's the print you had? I didn't notice that at all, and I watched it on an HD screen which usually makes flaws like that seem worse..
