I remember watching this back when and just going with it. Watched the last hour of it just now on TCM with someone who hadn't seen it and they liked it too. It's not for viewers of certain negligible discernment, intellect and patience.
I've decided not to disparage Minnie Driver in this post. Trying to take the higher road these days in such matters.
The timpano is the definition of food porn. Then again, the beautiful ending scene with Second making a simple omelette got me salivating too :)

Nice to meet a kindred spirit DFD! As much as I love many of the actors in R.D. I felt it was unnecessary to make it at all though it delved into some facets of the book that Manhunter didn't. So many of the similar scenes were done FAR better in Manhunter for sure. I didn't want to say it before as I have had many R.D. fans jump all over me for my preference on other threads! :) Long live Michael Mann!!!
I've been championing "Manhunter" ever since I first saw it at a drive-in back in '86, not even knowing what it was about. I remember catching the last half hour or so and getting caught up in it so we stayed and watched the whole thing after the second feature. I was the only one left awake by then haha...I actually own an original VHS tape of the movie, released either late 86 or early 87. It's fading fast so I try not to watch it unless I'm pointing out some discrepancies in the original theatrical version(which is on the tape) and subsequent versions on tape and DVD. I dont know if it's available on Blu-ray yet and I of all people should know.
Red Dragon was just a cheap leg-hump to try and milk Hannibal and Silence of The Lambs. I kinda liked Silence when I first saw it because it was out there, but I havent enjoyed it since then. Jonathan Demme's style gets on my nerves. Too hacky and un-subtle. I dug Hannibal more, but Manhunter rules :)
I have more to say about it but it slips my mind at the moment. I'll chime in again soon :)

I 'believe I saw it first on HBO in the late eighties. I was in my room and my Dad came in and said "you need to come and check out this movie, it just started with this really creepy scene of someone breaking into a family's house while they're sleeping". Needless to say I took his advice, and was hooked immediately. I still can't hear "Inna Godda Davida" without thinking of Will Graham crashing through the window!
I'm a retard for forgetting that it was available on Blu-ray. I just havent bought it yet because the original version is too hard to find on DVD/Blu-ray.
