Pascal and Gabriella?

One of my top 5 movies and I watched it again tonight. But for some reason I'm confused about their relationship. Are they current lovers, former lovers, employer and employee or father/daughter? At one point, someone refers to Pascal as Gabriella's "old man," but that's sort of vague. Thanks.

lovers, i believe.

after secondo sleeps with her, he makes a comment about her other man being older.

she quips back "richer, too"

I think Secundo's affair with Gabriella is also impetus for Pascal's deceit. He already wants to bankrupt them anyway so he can acquire Primo as his head chef. He used the affair as fuel for the brothers' ruin. In the end, he probably thought the ultimate punishment would be to crush their restaurant and for Primo to come work for him.

reply

Perhaps, but I remember Pascal being rather taken aback when Secundo asks if he did this because of the affair.

As if his wife was a trivial matter, when compared to his restaurant.

Could be both though.

reply

That was probably part of Pascal's deceit. He freely admitted that he wanted them to come to work for them but men rarely admit to being injured by jealousy though I think he was seething underneath. Obviously he knew for a long time so maybe his wife really was a trivial matter. Maybe he was used to her cheating on him.

reply

That was his wife? I thought just lovers.

reply

I figured they were lovers. But we saw Gabrielle living in an apartment. We never saw where Pascal lived.

"We're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did."

reply

I've always believed just lovers. As noted, we see Secundo "visit" Gabrielle at her apartment, and it's not likely Pascal lived in a place like that.

Great film!

My impression was that they were "friends" and "lovers" of a sort, but it wasn't anything traditional. I think Gabriella knew what a pathetic man Pascal truly was, but I think she was using him in her own way.

In the scene where they enter Secondo's restaurant, Gabriella has a big rock on her ring finger. I assume they are married.
